The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is pleased to announce the upcoming “Harmonizing and modeling climate, environment and health data to support public health decision-making”, a five-day, hands-on training program focused on tools and methods for climate, environmental, and health research.
Hosted by the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) in Lima, Peru, from 22 to 26 February 2027, the training will be delivered in English and is supported by full scholarships covering travel, accommodation, and meals. This initiative is made possible through the Wellcome-funded project HARMONIZE, in collaboration with the IDExtremes and TACTIC projects. The program will offer two training tracks. Applicants must select only one track when applying.
Track 1
Climate and Health Data Harmonization, Modeling and Impact Attribution
Participants will explore HARMONIZE tools such as data4health, socio4health, clim4health; the IDExtremes packages from the GHRtools suite to harmonize data, model and predict health outcomes, and assess the health impacts of climate change using advanced methods currently developed within TACTIC.22–26 February 2027
Track 2
Harmonizing Remote Sensing Data for Health
Participants will learn to process drone and satellite imagery, analyze environmental changes, and integrate data for health research using drones4health, land4health, and cube4health. A practical drone flight session will also be included.22–24 February 2027
Eligibility:
The course welcomes applicants from academia (Bachelor's degree holders, Master’s and PhD students or postdoctoral researchers), public institutions, government agencies, NGOs, and other relevant professional sectors. Candidates from across Latin America and the Caribbean are encouraged to apply, especially those with knowledge of national datasets and the potential to apply the tools in their work.
Applicants should have at least a basic/intermediate knowledge of R, as the course involves hands-on coding. Participants will have to bring their own laptops; a list of software requirements will be circulated closer to the course date.
